Die Hausmutter (Noctua pronuba) ist in Europa weit verbreitet und vergleichsweise häufig, auch wenn sie als nachtaktiver Falter natürlich nicht sofort ins Auge fällt. Da der Falter jedoch manchmal nachts in die Häuser fliegt, um dort tagsüber zu ruhen, wird er doch hier und da wahrgenommen. Daher auch der deutsche Name. Die Art wurde in Nordamerika eingeschleppt und ist inzwischen wahrscheinlich weit verbreitet. Die Paarung und die Eiablage erfolgen relativ spät im Jahr. Die Weibchen legen ihre Eier in mehreren Gelegen ab, insgesamt können es 2000 bis 3000 Eier sein.
